Public Service Announcements
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission has created several informative and educational PSAs to help the teenagers, parents, community members, retailers and law enforcement better understand the consequences of providing alcohol to minors and/or dangers of underage drinking.
- "Hey Becky" is a 30 second PSA that walks you through an underage drinking party from the prospective of a youth. Targeting parents and community members and discussing how today's underage drinking parties are very different and potentially much more dangerous than they were in the past. This is a direct result of the type of alcohol that is now being consumed at these parties. Parents may not understand how common over-consumption is and just how dangerous underage drinking can be.
- "Alcohol by Volume" is a 2:40 minute video that targets parents and community members and explains "Alcohol by Volume" and how it relates to a standard drink (beer, malt beverage, wine and spirits), It also discuss how today's underage drinking parties are very different and potentially much more dangerous than they were in the past. Parents may not understand how common over-consumption is and just how dangerous underage drinking can be. Parents and community members are urged to prevent underage drinking.
- "Bulletin Board" is a 1 minute video that is part of the Party Dispersal Training for Law Enforcement. It targets law enforcement and emergency medical personnel. This video instructs emergency personnel to focus on the type of alcohol available and alcohol by volume when entering an underage drinking party or emergency situation. The type of alcohol that is present can change the focus from just dealing with slightly intoxicated party goers to a possible medical emergency.
- "Consequences of Underage Drinking" - This PSA details the serious consequences of drinking alcohol prior to age 21 including fines, community service, alcohol awareness class and even getting your driver's license confiscated.
- "Friends Don't Leave Friends Behind" - This PSA targets young adults and reminds them to watch out for their friends. If you go to a party together, leave together. Friends don't let friends leave with someone they have just met.
- "If It Happens" – A lot of parents think it is a good idea to let their teenager and friends drink only in their home. This PSA targets parents and informs them of some of the consequences of providing alcohol to minors at their home.
- "It's Your Duty" – Texas has the second most active duty military personnel in the United States. For many retailers this provides a moral dilemma. They have underage service men and women that come into their establishments trying to purchase alcohol, they are old enough to go to war, but can't buy alcohol. What is a retailer to do? This PSA targets those retailers and informs them on the consequences of selling alcohol to minors, even military minors.
- "You Drink. You Drive. You Pay" – Some teenagers may not know that Texas has a Zero Tolerance when it comes to minors (a person under the age of 21) driving under the influence of alcohol. This PSA targets teenagers and informs them of some of the consequences of driving with ANY detectable amount of alcohol in their system, this means even one drink.
Copies of these PSAs are available to Coalitions, Schools or other organizations that wish to air them on their local TV or Radio stations or TABC can provide a link for a website.
